Shoulder Replacement
What is a Shoulder Replacement?
Shoulder replacement surgery, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is a procedure that involves removing damaged areas of the shoulder joint and replacing them with metal and plastic implants. This surgery is performed to relieve pain, weakness, and stiffness caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, rotator cuff injuries, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteonecrosis. The implants used in shoulder replacements come in various shapes and sizes, including options for partial or total replacement using anatomic or reverse implants.
Shoulder replacement options depend on the type of joint damage present. Anatomic total shoulder replacement involves replacing both the ball and socket with implants that resemble the natural shape of the bones. Reverse total shoulder replacement, on the other hand, reverses the positions of the ball and socket implants and is preferred when the rotator cuff is severely damaged.
While shoulder replacement surgery generally offers relief from pain and an improved range of motion, there are potential risks and complications. Preparing for the surgery involves evaluations, tests, and discussions with the surgeon, and the recovery process typically includes physical therapy and post-operative care.
