Nissen or Toupet Fundoplication

Nissen and Toupet fundoplication are surgical anti-reflux procedures to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Both involve the placement of a floppy, short wrap around the distal esophagus. The difference is that Nissen is a complete, 360-degree wrap whereas Toupet is a 270-degree wrap. The procedures reinforce the lower portion of the esophagus to aid the sphincter and prevents acid from backing up causing acid reflux and heartburn.

Both procedures can be performed laparoscopically which is less invasive as smaller incisions are made. Recovery time is shortened with procedures performed laparoscopically. Depending on the patient's condition, a provider will make the best recommendation for the type of procedure needed.
