Karen Werskey Honored with DAISY Award
May 01, 2016
Schneck Medical Center is proud to announce that Karen Werskey, MSN, RN, CNOR, Clinical Resource Educator, has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Faculty at the IU School of Nursing.
The DAISY Faculty Award honorees personify the remarkable impact of the IU School of Nursing’s part-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and preceptors on students and, therefore, patients.  These instructors consistently demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise and extraordinary compassionate care, and they are recognized as outstanding role models in our nursing community.
Karen was nominated by Bethany Murray, full-time faculty at Indiana University Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC).  Her nomination read:
“Even while an active employee of Schneck Medical Center, Karen found the time to develop and teach a valuable elective in the summer of 2015 that incorporated over eight hours of simulated operating room experience and was open to both RN-to-BSN completion students and traditional BSN students. Karen also cheerfully and willingly takes on other classes to help the nursing faculty at IUPUC.  Karen manages her courses adroitly and with great expertise.  She is upbeat and optimistic with other faculty and with students.  Karen has been both a pleasure, and a treasure, for the nursing division in Columbus.”
Karen is the clinical resource educator and the coordinator of the Simulation Laboratory at Schneck.  In her 30 years as a registered nurse at Schneck, she has worked in the emergency department, the operating room, and as a nurse educator.  She spent 20 years in the operating room serving in the roles of circulator, scrub nurse, and unit educator. She co-authored the article “Creating a Professional Development Plan for a Simulation Consortium” published in Clinical Simulation in Nursing.  In addition, Karen serves as the chair of Schneck’s Evidence Based Practice & Research Council, is a member of the Regional Medical Internal Review Board for both Schneck and Columbus Regional Hospital, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, Southeastern Indiana Simulation Consortium, and the Indiana State Nurses Association. Karen received her ASN and BSN from Indiana State University and her MSN in Nursing Leadership from the University of Southern Indiana.
