Aphasia

What is aphasia?

Aphasia is a disorder that affects speaking or understanding speech, typically due to brain damage or conditions that disrupt brain function. It often results from issues like strokes or traumatic brain injuries but can also be a temporary effect of conditions like migraines. The type of aphasia depends on the location of the brain damage.

There is no direct cure for aphasia, but it is often treatable. Treatment typically starts by addressing the underlying condition, such as restoring blood flow after a stroke to prevent permanent damage. If aphasia is caused by temporary issues like a concussion, migraine, seizure, or infection, it often resolves as the brain heals.

For long-term or permanent brain damage, such as from severe strokes, speech therapy can improve language abilities and comprehension. Speech therapy may also involve caregivers and loved ones to help them better support and communicate with the affected person. If you or a loved one is experiencing aphasia, our team at Schneck can work with you to understand your options.
